National

A new type of tickHyalomma marginatum – has appeared in Hungary.

Hyalomma marginatum can be typically found in Africa, and it carries the so-called Crimean–Congo hemorrhagic fever.

Employees of the MTA – Institute of Ecology have found a Hyalomma marginatum on Margaret Island, Budapest when they had been studying hedgehogs and the ticks on them for three years.

The Crimean–Congo hemorrhagic fever sometimes appears in Europe, for example in Romania, Serbia and Bulgaria, the tick is also present in Croatia, but until recently, scientists thought that – due to the winter season – Hyalomma marginatum can be found only in the Mediterranean region. However, recently ticks have been found in Hungary and Northern Germany, too.
