Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony called for sustained patience from the city’s residents in a Facebook message, following a one-minute stoppage of public transport services at noon, paying tribute to victims of the epidemic.

Karácsony said recent days saw a “painfully” high number of victims, adding that the one-minute silence could not bring back those that died but represented a warning that there was no room for impatience” and “no matter how difficult, we must still hold on”. “The minute-long silence also reminded everyone that we owe a debt of gratitude to those that make every effort to fight for other people’s lives,” he said.
