Rik Daems, president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, has expressed “full support” for the priorities of CoE’s Hungarian presidency, including promoting effective protection for national minorities as well as environmental goals, the Hungarian justice minister said on Thursday.

Following informal talks with the president, Judit Varga wrote on Facebook that Daems welcomed the Hungarian presidency’s promotion of the right to a healthy environment as a high priority.

Varga said that the Hungarian government’s approach to the link between human rights and environmental protection was “realistic”, and insisted that effective environmental policies “might not hinder innovation and economic development”.
