The number of births declined by an annual 5.9% in July to 8,153, and the number of deaths edged down by 1.7% to 9,632, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) said.
Population decline was up by 30% from July 2020, with deaths outstripping births by 1,479, KSH said. The number of marriages increased, with 9,605 couples tying the knot, 28% more than in the same period in 2020. Preliminary figures show that there were 52,320 births in Jan-July, down 691 from the same period a year earlier. The number of deaths was 90,201, 21% (15,629) more than in Jan-May 2020. The rise in deaths and the drop in the birth rate means that the rate of natural population decline was up by 76% compared with the same period last year, KSH said.
