The epidemic is expected to accelerate in October and the influenza virus may appear, virologist Miklós Rusvai said.
In colder, wetter weather, runny nose symptoms, nursery and school infections are becoming more common, and it is difficult to distinguish on the basis of the symptoms alone that one of the dozens of cold rash viruses, or respiratory allergies, or coronaviruses, or even the flu, causes the infection, the expert said.
Miklós Rusvai warned that the co-occurrence of influenza and coronavirus is always more severe. The influenza epidemic fell short last season – there were only less than 10 officially confirmed cases – and the spread of the infection was also severely limited by mask wearing.
Concerning that an English study found that 99 per cent of intensively treated covid patients there were not vaccinated, the specialist pointed out that while the vaccine does not prevent infection, it does prevent serious, fatal illness.
Miklós Rusvai also talked about the fact that several new mutations have been found since the discovery of the delta variant, but among them there is no one that would cause concern about its spread or because the vaccine does not protect against it.
