The opposition LMP party has called on the parliamentary group leaders of the allied ruling Fidesz and Christian Democrats, as well as the agriculture minister, to discuss the environmental protection of Hungary’s major lakes.
Earlier, government officials were requested in writing to include the issue of protecting the flora, fauna and habitat of Lake Balaton, Lake Velence and Lake Fertő, and Lake Tata in parliament’s agenda, Erzsébet Schmuck, the green party’s co-leader, told an online press briefing on Thursday. She accused Fidesz and its junior ally of having blocked the submission of LMP’s proposal to parliament. A meeting would provide an opportunity to discuss “environmental interests instead of [the ruling parties’] and construction lobby’s short-term economic interests”, she added.
