Over the past five years Viktor Orbán’s government has spent over 3,600 billion forints (EUR 10.2bn) on motorway and dual carriageway construction, László György, state secretary of innovation and technology, said on social media.

From 2009 to 2019 Hungary expanded its motorway and dual carriageway network more rapidly than all but two member states of the European Union, Saturday’s Magyar Nemzet cited György as saying on Facebook. Since 2010 the total length of such top-quality highways has increased by 65% to exceed 1,800 kilometres today, and with the projects in progress, it will be well in excess of 2,000 kilometres, he said. György noted that back in 2010 the government had set three priorities in motorway construction. Firstly, all motorways should reach the border and connect Hungary with its neighbours. Secondly, all cities with county rank should be accessible on a four-lane road by 2025. And finally, all Hungarian localities should be made accessible within 30 minutes from a four-lane road.
