We have jointly condemned Russia’s military action against Ukraine and decided to impose uniform sanctions, Viktor Orbán said in a statement posted on Facebook on Friday morning after the EU summit in Brussels. “I have made it clear that we will stand up for Hungary’s national interests and will not allow anyone to plunge Hungary into this war,” the prime minister said.
The Hungarian prime minister said that they agreed at the summit that war could not be the answer to any conflict.
He emphasized that the uniform sanctions do not affect the field of energy, therefore, as he said, the energy supply of Hungary and the other member states of the Union is guaranteed despite the sanctions.
According to Viktor Orbán, it was decided that more money should be spent on the security of the countries neighboring Ukraine, including Hungary, “and that we should spend more money on eastern border protection”.
The prime minister said they agreed at the summit that responsible behavior was needed, and hasty and irresponsible statements would only make the situation worse and endanger the security of the people of Europe.
He said talks were continuing in NATO.
