The Gripens took off due to a bomb threat.
The Gripens of the Hungarian Armed Forces were alerted this morning to a Turkish civilian plane flying from Moscow to Istanbul, according to a statement from the Ministry of Defense. As they write, the plane from Moscow to Istanbul received a bomb threat over Polish airspace, which led the NATO Joint Air Operations Center to order the takeover of the Hungarian Gripen.
When the plane arrived in Hungary, it was identified by fighter jets, and then it was escorted to the Hungarian-Romanian border, where it left Hungarian airspace.
The Gripens remained in the area after the plane left Hungarian airspace and performed a patrol task, after which they returned to their base in Kecskemét.
Similar defenses have proliferated recently. Last Saturday, fighter planes had to take off due to the bomb threat of a plane flying from Georgia to Poland.
