Student ID cards from the previous academic year and semester are valid until the end of October

The student ID stickers received in the previous academic year or semester entitle you to use the travel discount until October 31, so the MÁV-Volán group asks those traveling with the student discount to ensure that the validity of their document is extended in time.

MÁV Zrt. told MTI on Tuesday: public education and higher education institutions provide student ID cards with a validating sticker every academic year and semester. In public education institutions, the annual sticker is valid until October 31, and in higher education, the stickers for the second semester of the 2022/23 school year are valid.

Given that the autumn break falls between October 28 and November 5 this year, it is worth getting the new stickers in time, they wrote.

They added that the student card is valid even without a validation sticker until October 31 following the school year in which the student turns 16. Students who were born before August 31, 2007, can prove their travel entitlement with a student card without a sticker until October 31 of this year.

Attention was drawn to the fact that students who do not yet have a student ID card, but have requested one, can use the travel discounts associated with the student ID card with the QR code, printed, original seal and signature certificate received before the ID card is issued.

They said that day or evening students in public education and higher education can travel between their place of residence (place of stay) and their educational institution with a pass discount, and in any case with discounted national and county passes or ticket discounts on domestic and intercity lines of MÁV-Start and Volánbusz , as well as on the outer sections of the HÉV. Students participating in correspondence education with a valid student ID card are entitled to exchange discounted tickets between their place of residence and the educational institution.

They also informed that children under the age of 14 can travel free of charge on public transport within the borders of Budapest, including on HÉV lines, but they must be able to show a valid Hungarian student ID card – or a replacement certificate issued by the school – in the event of an inspection. This discount can be used until the last day of the school year – including the summer vacation, i.e. until August 31 – in which the child turns 14, they wrote.
