Hungarians across the border can travel for free on intercity trains in Hungary from March, reports Szabad Magyar Szó.
It was announced that from March 1, 2024, a completely new system will replace the discount system of the Hungarian State Railways (MÁV), in which 22 of the 65 types of discounts will remain, keeping the 50 percent discounts, eliminating the 20 and 30 percent discounts, and introducing the so-called stamped system.
The MÁV press department was asked how this change affects the situation of users of Hungarian identity cards. So far, they have been able to travel 4 times a year within Hungary, with a 90 percent discount. This is the answer they received:
Thanks to the tariff reform, it will be possible to travel unlimited free of charge on intercity public transport with a Hungarian Identity Card. Trains requiring a seat ticket can be used by exchanging a seat ticket and designated national bus routes can be used by purchasing an additional ticket.
