Dániel Karsai, a former constitutional lawyer, died on September 28th at the age of 47. He suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and dedicated the last years of his life to the fight for active euthanasia.
“Dani left tonight. For more than 3 years, he fought heroically and with dignity against the invincible enemy ALS” – wrote Péter Karsai, Dániel Karsai’s brother.

On August 10th, 2023, he submitted a claim to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg in connection with his own illness, as he believes that the Hungarian ban on making end-of-life decisions violates basic human rights (the right to self-determination stemming from human dignity, the prohibition of inhumane and degrading treatment and the freedom of worldview conviction the right to choose) violates.
On March 28th, 2024, he was hospitalized with pneumonia, and upon returning home, his ability to speak continued to deteriorate, and he lived his life completely bedridden.
