Budapest’s Liszt Ferenc International Airport is once again operating with both runways, and air traffic is gradually returning to normal — the airport operator announced on its website Monday evening.
They recalled that Monday’s severe thunderstorm also affected the airport. Due to debris carried by strong winds, the runways were temporarily closed for safety reasons at 2:20 p.m. After cleanup, Runway 1 was reopened within an hour and a half, and Runway 2 resumed operations at 5:23 p.m.
According to the statement, air traffic is gradually being restored, and the airport is back to operating with both runways. However, due to the storm, several inbound flights had to land at alternative airports, resulting in the cancellation of some outbound flights from Budapest.
Part of Terminal 2A’s departure hall was flooded, so all check-ins are now being handled in Terminal 2B.
No injuries were reported, and damage assessment is currently underway. Terminal information staff from Budapest Airport and officers from the Airport Police Directorate are present in increased numbers on-site.
The situation inside the terminal is calm, with passengers waiting patiently — the statement noted. The airport operator is providing continuous updates, although currently only a simplified version of the Budapest Airport website is available.
