The Hungarian Parliament elected András Baka as president of the Republic on Tuesday.
The former president of the Supreme Court, who was nominated for the presidency by the ruling Tisza parliamentary group, was elected in a secret ballot with 140 votes in favour and six against.
Parliament was required to elect a new president because, under the 17th amendment to the Fundamental Law, President Tamás Sulyok’s term of office ended at midnight on July 20. In accordance with the provisions of the Fundamental Law, his powers were temporarily assumed by Ágnes Forsthoffer, the Speaker of Parliament.
András Baka will take office as president on the eighth day following the announcement of the election results.
