Police in Debrecen arrested a young man who was suspected of robbing a 79-year-old woman on the open street within an hour.
A report arrived at the police on December 15, 2021, around 7 o’clock, that a young boy had stolen the bag of an elderly woman on Piac Street in Debrecen while attacking her. Police immediately went to the scene and called an ambulance to the victim, who was later found to have suffered serious injuries as a result of the crime. The woman wanted to cross a pedestrian crossing as she stepped beside the young man who grabbed her, then tore the bag over her shoulder with tremendous force, pulling her and pushing her elderly victim to the ground.
Local investigators, patrols, and district commissioners have launched a chase to locate the perpetrator. The bag was found in a nearby doorway, as well as scattering its contents, personal documents, and valuables.
Police obtained an accurate description of the man so they could begin his search immediately. Within an hour, the district commissioners found the 22-year-old in one of the shopping malls in Debrecen. He was taken to the police station, where, after questioning the suspect, the investigators took him into criminal custody and made a motion to arrest him.
The man from Hajdúhadház made a detailed confession and told the police that he did not think about the consequences of his actions. Guided by a sudden idea, he decided to get the woman’s bag.
The Criminal Department of the Debrecen Police Headquarters has opened an investigation against him for robbery and serious bodily harm, as well as for a well-founded suspicion of committing a misuse of a public document.
