The Debrecen Regional Investigation Prosecutor’s Office has charged a Romanian man who wanted to bribe a border guard serving on the border with a crime of bribery.
On March 22, 2022, at 8 pm, a Romanian man wanted to enter Hungary from Ukraine by car at the Tiszabecs Road Border Crossing. According to the well-founded suspicion, the 21-year-old man carried 56 boxes and another 160 cigarettes without Hungarian seals in the car. During the customs inspection, it declared the shipment of less than the actual quantity of three cartons of cigarettes, which, however, still exceeded the quantity that could be imported duty-free.
The perpetrator offered the treasurer EUR 20 in order not to determine the amount of import duties and other charges payable in breach of his duty or to allow him to enter without collecting it. The financial officer refused the undue advantage and carried out a customs inspection.
After the financier inspected the car and uncovered the violation of the custom, the man repeatedly offered the € 20 with the aim of the staff sergeant breaching his duty. The bribe money was not accepted by the financier and lawsuits were filed against the man.
The Debrecen Regional Investigation Prosecutor’s Office questioned the Romanian man as a suspect, who did not admit to committing the crime.
