The Debrecen Public Prosecutor’s Office brought charges against the man who stole from a sleeping passenger on a passenger train for the crime of robbery.

According to the indictment, on March 19, 2022, at 6:06 a.m. in Kisújszállás, the victim boarded the passenger train heading for Nyíregyháza. Later, he placed his cell phone in a faux leather case on a small table at arm’s length next to the row of seats and fell asleep.

In Debrecen, the accused boarded the train and noticed the sleeping victim and the mobile phone. Taking advantage of the fact that there were no passengers nearby, the man took the victim’s mobile phone and got off the train at the Hajdúhadháza station.

The accused sold the HUF 56,000 device for HUF 17,000 to an acquaintance who had no idea that the mobile phone was stolen.

During the investigation, the Mátészalka Police Department seized the stolen mobile phone and returned it to the victim, thereby compensating for the damage caused by the crime.

The District Prosecutor’s Office in Debrecen brought charges against the defendant, who admitted to committing the crime, for the crime of robbery at the District Court in Debrecen. In the indictment, he proposed that the district court sentence the defendant to imprisonment.

The indictment also contains a moderate motion, if the accused admits to committing the crime following the indictment and waives his right to a trial, the district court will sentence him to 80 days in prison.
