The District Court of Debrecen today ordered the arrest of the two suspects who, according to reasonable suspicion, killed a Polish man in a weekend house in Nagyhegyes for one month – until November 13, 2023.
A couple from Hajdú-Bihar county buried and then poured concrete over the body of their Polish guest
According to the available data, the 39-year-old man started abusing the 43-year-old Polish man with his bare hands at around 3 a.m. on October 1, 2023. The suspect’s 31-year-old partner also handed the man a baseball bat, with which the suspect also assaulted the victim, who eventually died on the spot. After that, the man and his partner buried the victim’s body in the yard of their Nagyhegyes property, which the man later covered with concrete, and burned the victim’s clothing and other belongings, as well as the baseball bat used for the abuse.
According to the court’s opinion, the motion for the arrest of the suspects made by the Hajdú-Bihar County Prosecutor General’s Office is well-founded.
The crime reported by the police is of particular seriousness, its punishment – in addition to the current classification – is a prison sentence of five to fifteen years, but the precise determination of the classification of the crime is also the subject of the investigation. In view of the seriousness of the act, there is a risk of escape and hiding based on the magnitude of the expected punishment in the event of the criminal liability of the suspects.
Both suspects have a valid residence in Hungary and an adequate income, however, the 39-year-old man lived in England from 2007 to approximately 2015, based on which it can be reasonably concluded that during this time he built up a network of contacts, thanks to which he has a realistic opportunity to go abroad even with your partner. The investigation is in the initial stage, in addition to the exact clarification of the circumstances of the crime, it is also justified to carry out a number of procedural actions, as well as to search for and seize new physical evidence.
Contradictions can be established between the confessions of the suspects. Solving them without influence and checking the defense of the suspects is also a key investigative interest.
In order to make the subsequent identification more difficult and to hide the evidence, the suspects buried the victim’s body by mutual decision, the man covered the affected area with concrete, and material evidence was removed. In the warrant procedure ordered due to the victim’s disappearance, the suspects were interviewed at the Hajdúszoboszló Police Station on October 10, 2023, but during this, they denied having knowledge of the victim’s whereabouts. According to the judgment of the court, due to these reasons, there is a well-founded fear that if the suspects are released, they would either illegally influence each other or the witnesses, and the effectiveness of the evidence would be jeopardized.
Although the suspects have no criminal record, the court considered it justified to order the strictest coercive measure, keeping in mind the state of the investigation and its interests.
The prosecutor’s office and the man took note of the decision, while the woman filed an appeal.
