On Friday, the Debrecen Court sentenced the two Serbian siblings who wanted to rob a jewelry store in Debrecen to prison, the spokesperson of the court informed MTI.
According to Dénes Dobó’s announcement, the court found the defendants guilty of attempted armed robbery of significant value and attempted assault as accomplices.
As a multiple repeat offender, the first defendant was sentenced to 10 years in prison, while the second defendant was sentenced to 7 years and 6 months in prison. In addition, the court expelled the defendants from the territory of Hungary for 10 and 8 years. The first accused cannot be released on parole, while his companion can be released on parole after serving two-thirds of the sentence – the spokesperson explained the details, noting that the sentence is not final, the prosecution reserved three working days to think about the declaration of legal remedy, while the accused and their lawyers appealed the decision.
The court maintained the arrest of the defendants until the second-degree final judgment of the case, he added.
In its judgment, the court found that the Serbian siblings were in transit in Hungary in January 2022, visiting their acquaintances in Debrecen. Around January 20, the older man noticed a small jewelry store in downtown Debrecen where only one person worked. The man entered the store and assessed the environment and the store’s inventory. The defendant agreed with the seller to purchase a piece of jewelry that the victim had ordered for him.
The brother and sister then agreed to rob the selected jewelry store. The older man obtained a gas-alarm weapon, and his sibling took a sports bag and several quick-release fasteners with them, and on January 27, 2022, they appeared at the jewelry store after opening.
First, the older man went in and asked the victim, who was alone, to show him the gold chains in the shop window. Meanwhile, his companion entered the room and pointed the gas-alarm weapon she had at the victim. The victim then told the defendants to take away the valuables in the store, but despite this, the two defendants attacked the man, punched him in the head several times and put a tray containing 83 gold rings worth nearly HUF 4.5 million into the sports bag.
The crime was noticed by a passerby who informed the police. It was due to the stubborn resistance and courage of the abused seller that the accused could not take the bag with them, they even left the gas-alarm weapon at the scene, and then fled the scene. The value endangered by the crime was more than HUF 52 million.
The defendants ran to a car parked nearby, while two passers-by tried to catch up with them. The Serbian defendants got into the car and drove away. The police deployed several units to arrest them, and they chased the defendants in downtown Debrecen. They were arrested after the brothers crashed into and damaged several vehicles parked at the corner of Csapó and Bercsényi streets with the car they used to escape.
As a result of the abuse, the victim sustained injuries that healed within eight days, however, given the manner, intensity and persistent nature of the abuse, there was a possibility of the injury healing beyond eight days, the spokesperson wrote.
