The librarian of a company in Debrecen defrauded millions with fake orders

The man ordered ostensibly professional publications from his own company, which his employer paid for – causing more than HUF 17 million in damage.

According to the indictment, the perpetrator had been working as a librarian at a company based in Debrecen since 1989, where, in addition to librarian work, he was also responsible for procuring professional publications.

The man, on behalf of his employer, placed an order for a total of 58 technical books between March 2016 and September 2018 to a local limited partnership, which procured the publications directly from the publishers. The company issued the fee applications, based on which the ordering company paid the price of the publications. However, the defendant deceived his employer, because the limited partnership under his control did not order any books, and the bank account provided for payment was his own.

The offender’s employer ordered an internal investigation, where several irregularities were discovered. To cover up what he had done during the investigation, the accused submitted false invoices and bank transfer receipts that gave the impression that the invoicing and delivery of the technical books had also taken place.

Due to the damage caused, the employing company initiated a civil lawsuit against the company managed by the man, in which the court ordered the perpetrator to pay the damage and interest.

The case was investigated by the Debrecen Police Department.

The Debrecen District Prosecutor’s Office accuses the man who confessed to the crime of fraud of significant value, business-like fraud and the offense of using a false private document. In his indictment, if the legal conditions are met, he suggested that the District Court of Debrecen sentence the defendant to 1 year and 6 months in prison, the execution of which should be suspended for a 3-year probationary period.
