Scammer arrested in Debrecen for defrauding victims on dating sites

Debrecen police are conducting a fraud investigation against a Ukrainian citizen. A woman filed a report in 2023, alleging that a man deceived her and caused her a financial loss of several million forints. Debrecen police launched an investigation and identified a 59-year-old Ukrainian man.

The man primarily targeted victims on dating sites, luring them with various fraudulent business proposals. These included low-cost video card purchases for cryptocurrency mining equipment and schemes for buying investment gold or paying for car repairs. He allegedly caused damages of more than 32 million forints to nine victims in total, which he never repaid.

An arrest warrant was issued, leading to his capture by local police on October 22, 2024, in the city. He was taken into custody, and the police recommended his pre-trial detention, which the Debrecen District Court ordered on October 25. He has confessed to the charges.

The Investigative Department of the Debrecen Police Headquarters is proceeding with the case on charges of fraud.
