The Debrecen District Prosecutor’s Office has brought charges of petty theft against a man who stole the shoes he tried on from a store in Debrecen.
According to the indictment, on the afternoon of July 25, 2024, the defendant went to a shoe store in Debrecen, where he sought to enforce a warranty claim regarding a pair of sports shoes previously purchased for his son.
A dispute arose between the defendant and the shop assistant regarding the exchange, as the assistant argued that the defendant’s request was not justified, which the man refused to accept.
At that point, he decided to take another pair of similar sports shoes from the store. He asked the assistant for a pair, tried them on, examined them, and then left the shop wearing the new shoes.
The defendant caused damage of nearly 55,000 forints, which was not compensated during the proceedings conducted by the Debrecen Police Department. Although the investigators seized the shoes from him, they could no longer be sold due to their used condition.
The Debrecen District Prosecutor’s Office has charged the defendant, who admitted to committing the offense, with petty theft before the Debrecen District Court. In the indictment, which seeks a penal order, the prosecutor proposed that the court place the defendant on probation without holding a trial, based on the case files, and that it substantively assess and grant the civil claim submitted by the victim.
