After the junior World Cup victory of Sugár Battai on Saturday, the lovers of fencing in Debrecen were not left without excitement on Sunday. The fencers of Interfencing Debrecen SC performed successfully in two locations.
Of course, the U20 World Cup in Poland is in the lead. In the women’s sword team competition, the trio formed by Sugár Battai of the previous day, Kíra Keszei and Luca Szűcs, supplemented with Dorottya Beviz, started the fights at an unusual time at 8 am. In the first match, with a confident 45-21 victory for the Turks, the girls warmed up to an eternal classic against the Russians. The Russian team, made up of good forces, did no better than they could continue in the lower division after the Turkish defeat of 45-28, while the Hungarians could continue to fight for the medal. However, the podium did not come together this time, as our national team was defeated 45-44 in both the semi-finals against the Italians and the bronze match against the French. At the same time, the website of the Hungarian Fencing Association, hunfencing.hu, highlighted the performance of Interfencing Debrecen SC’s talent, Katinka Battai Sugár, who was able to finish each match with a positive hit rate. In all four matches, she gave her opponents more than 34 hits than she was forced to suffer.
Mátyás K. Szabó and Marcell Bányay took part in the afternoon men’s competition. They both moved on confidently from their group. K. Szabó had to fight with his compatriot, Benedek Vígh, to get to the main board. The routine competitor of the iron has now proved to be better than the talent in Debrecen. Bányay won the first match of the board against Veccia Scavalli of Italy. Although he led in vain in his next ass, the Romanian Nitu was 15-13. Marcell Bányay Mátyás K. Szabó closed the 156th Sosnowiec World Cup in 82nd place. The former was enriched with 2, the latter with 1 world ranking point.
This year’s adult country championship was held in Szolnok, far from Poland, but very close to Debrecen. The swordsmen of Interfencing Debrecen SC excelled in the competition. In the men’s sword, the fights brought home a final in Debrecen, where Vince Sápi defeated Czill Soma 15-5. Tamás Tóth also made it to the finals, where he finished 5th. The quartet of Debrecen, formed by Czill, Gulyás Bendegúz, Tóth and Sápi, won only a silver medal in the team competition. Ágnes Fekete won a silver medal and Márta Falucskai won a bronze medal.
The evaluation of László Dávid, the coach of the association, said: In order for someone to start in the junior world cup, they have to finish in the top 12 in the Hungarian system, for which the athletes have to win medals at a national team. Five of our clubs could start in Sosnowiec. This has never been the case in the history of fencing in Debrecen. We continue to believe that the wider and higher the quality of our association’s competitive base, the stronger and better our fencers will achieve in the higher age groups. A great example of this is the adult country championship, where we only won a gold, two silver, and a bronze medal with junior fencers. With this performance, of course, Interfencing Debrecen SC became the most successful club in Debrecen in the country OB. Congratulations to our athletes! ”
