Debrecen is preparing for the 66th István Bocskai International Boxing Memorial Competition, which will contain a cash prize for the first time after joining the international association’s newly launched World Boxing Tour, Lajos Barcsa, Deputy Mayor of Cívisváros, said in a press conference.

He recalled that Umar Kremlin, the president of the International Boxing Association (IBA) elected last year, had its first trip to Debrecen, and based on its experience, the Bocskai Memorial Competition was the first venue for the World Boxing Tour.

Debrecen will contribute to the success of the $ 100,000 competition with the provision of the Gábor Oláh Street Sports Hall, the placement of foreign athletes and judges, and prizes, saying the closed goalie matches were held last year due to the epidemic, but starters may punch before, with maximum adherence to epidemiological regulations.

Zsuzsanna Tóth, Secretary-General of the Hungarian Boxing Association added: about 200 competitors from 20 countries will take part in the Bocskai Memorial Competition, which will take place on the afternoon of February 8 and 13, 13 men and 12 female categories. The field will be strong, with prominent boxers coming to Debrecen from England, France, Ukraine, Turkey, Serbia, Brazil, Belarus, and the Czech Republic, among others.

Federal captain Róbert Bertók indicated that eight adult Hungarian champions will not be able to take part in the race due to injury or Covid infection, but most of the U22 and adult frames will go into the ring. Among the 204 nominees, there are 39 Hungarian men and 25 Hungarian women boxers, he added.

The manager mentioned DVSC’s two boxers, the 51-kilo Attila Bernáth and the 54-kilo Bernáth László. He said that the Hungarian national team is the strongest in the small and large weight groups, and expects serious results in these categories as well. He also said that the Hungarian starters were made with the Brazilian national team last week, and their performance there is encouraging in terms of successful racing.

According to Zoltán Pajna, a member of the board of the Hungarian Boxing Association, the chairman of the assembly in Hajdú-Bihar, everything was ready for the preparation, it is up to the boxers to determine the performance they provide. For decades, Debrecen has also been supporting the organization of the competition so that boxers from Debrecen can show off their skills at home, he said.

Sándor Szabó, a member of the board of the Hungarian Boxing Association, the head of DVSC emphasized: sixty young boxers of different ages in DVSC, six of them – 2 women and 4 men – will take part in the Bocskai Memorial Competition.
