16 racers from twelve countries will compete in the individual European Championship semi-finals, which will take place on May 1 at the Perényi Pál Salakmotor Stadium in Debrecen.
Deputy Mayor Lajos Barcsa (Fidesz-KDNP) emphasized at the competition’s press conference that the city management continues to see that there is a lot of interest in the slag motorcycle race in Debrecen, as it is the second most visited sporting event after football matches.
He emphasized that this year is really special, as eight competitions are being held, among which there are several prestigious contests. He explained that the competition on May 1st is the European Championship semi-final, which will be followed by a Grand Prix qualification in the same month, and then in June, the Perényi Pál Salakmotor Stadion will host the individual European Championship final.
He explained that, according to the municipality, the track and the operation are in good hands, since the international federation would not “give” the competitions if there was no proper sports professional work, which is why the city supports the sport with HUF 10 million this year as well.
Norbert Baráth, the managing director ofSpeedwolf Sportszervező Nonprofit Kft., emphasized that it is a great recognition that they receive the right to organize the European Championship semi-finals every year, this proves that the invested energy bears fruit. He added that since it is a stakes competition, much more well-known contestants arrive at this time than at an invitational competition.
He mentioned Dane Anders Thomsen among the candidates, who currently has a mechanic in Debrecen, understands Hungarian relatively well and is loved by the local fans. Next to him, he singled out Englishman Adam Ellis, Swedish Antonio Lindback and Polish Kacper Woryna. The first four places advance to the finals.
Hungarian colors are represented by Norbert Magosi. The organizers expect 3-4 thousand fans, tickets are already available, and there is also interest from abroad, including Poland, Slovenia and Romania. Norbert Baráth said that the competition starts at 3:00 p.m., the gates open at 1:00 p.m., and the fans can watch the free training session starting at 11:00 that morning.
