Following épée fencer Gergely Siklósi, sabre fencer Sugár Battai also won a bronze medal on Sunday at the European Fencing Championships in Genoa.
Battai started directly in the round of 32 after the group stage.
On the elimination tableau, she defeated Georgia’s Aleksandra Kuvaeva, Greece’s world silver and bronze medalist Despina Georgiadou, and Spain’s Lucia Martin-Portugues to reach the semifinals, where she faced France’s Sarah Noutcha.
In the first half of the bout, the Hungarian fencer had the advantage, but the one-minute break began with her opponent leading 8–7.
After the break, Noutcha fenced more decisively, gradually increased her lead, and ultimately won 15–9.
Battai — a two-time team world champion — claimed her first individual podium finish at a European Championship, securing the Hungarian delegation’s fourth medal in Genoa. Just minutes earlier, Gergely Siklósi had taken bronze in épée. On Saturday, Áron Szilágyi earned silver in sabre and Flóra Pásztor won bronze in foil.
