The winged dragon hits the road for the twentieth time in Nyírbátor. Hungary’s one and only street theatre festival takes place next week, from 13th to 15th July in the Nyírség region. Winged Dragon Festival is an event especially for those who love masquerades, actors with stilts, traditionalists and the atmosphere of commedia dell’arte.
On the first day of the festival, among the opening programmes there are several performances that can be undoubtedly attractive for great number of visitors.
Right at the beginning, the visitors of the worthily popular Winged Dragon Festival can take part in the procession throughout the city centre of Nyírbátor. The clamorous and funny event is going to start at 7:00 pm on the so-called Papok rétje (main location of the festival). After officially delivering the key of the city to the actors, it is the task of several musicians and dance ensembles to entertain the people until daybreak.
The second day of the International Street Theatre Festival will see different performances of amateur drama societies and professional puppet theatres. Various shows of Hungarian and foreign theatre companies (Polish, Czech, Slovak and English) along with spectacular concerts of traditional musicians will be held at several places. The Szabolcs Róka – Zoltán Kátai duo is especially worth mentioning, since their repertoire embraces traditional songs from the era of Renaissance to our day, and the duo’s popularity is undiminished from many years among the festival-goers.
The last day of this year’s festival still has manifold of shows and stage performances (Forrás Theatre, Other Half Company from England, Teatrul Merlin from Romania etc.).
Apart from the main stage programmes, there will be jugglers, showmen, and applied artists to entertain their audience in the afternoons.
Visiting the festival is absolutely free and Nyírbátor can be easily reached both by train and bus.
