It has now become possible to drive on motorway from Debrecen directly to the Romanian border. For the time being, the motorway continues in a length of five kilometres on the Romanian side.
The new stretch of the M4 Motorway between Berettyóújfalu and the border, as well as the border crossing point were inaugurated on Friday, 4 September 2020. On behalf of the governments of Hungary and Romania, the event was attended by Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Bogdan Aurescu, Romanian Foreign Affairs Minister, and Lucian Bode, Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Communication. László Papp, Mayor of Debrecen and Vice Mayor Lajos Barcsa also participated in the inauguration. The M4 Motorway was constructed in two phases, from the endpoint of M35, from Berettyóújfalu to the border. First, the few kilometres from the M35, then the rest were built. A 2×2-traffic-lane motorway has been constructed in the 29.5-kilometre stretch, which has emergency lanes and central reservation. The total width of the road is 26.6 metres.
