The University of Debrecen awards Russian President Vladimir Putin the title of Honorary Citizen, Civis honoris causa.
The University of Debrecen announced its decision on 18 August 2017. Honorary citizenship is a status given by a country on a foreign individual whom it considers to be especially admirable or otherwise worthy of the distinction.
The explanation of the Senate of the university was the following: “Both the Hungarian government and the Russian Federation intend to give an important role to the University of Debrecen in Paks II development”.
Putin was supposed to come to Debrecen to receive the title, however he decided to visit the World Judo Championships (organized in Budapest) instead.
The university awards him the Civis honoris causa title in Budapest.
