The University of Debrecen, with its nearly five thousand international students coming from more than a hundred different countries, is the largest institution of higher education in the Central and Eastern European region concerning the quality and popularity of its program offers in the English language. What is more, the university has made it clear that it aims to continue to enhance the quality of both its educational and research activities in order to achieve an even higher level of recognition, especially regarding its position in international university rankings. For this purpose, our institution has asked consultants from the internationally acclaimed organization Higher Education Academy (Advanced HE) to assist in the efforts to update and conform the currently available educational methods applied here to match the most recent international trends.
The foreign experts are expected to come to Debrecen this coming fall to conduct a four-day international workshop and training course on methodological issues in education for the teaching staff of faculties involved in the English-language programs. As part of a preliminary recon trip, representatives of Higher Education Academy Kathy Wright and John Unsworth spent two days at the University of Debrecen on the 26th and 27th of April.
During the course of their visit, they emphasized the following: it is indeed unique and especially important that our univerity has recognized the importance of the necessity of providing the teaching staff with up-to-date information concerning the most recent guidelines of methodology in education, so that they should be prepared to put these guidelines into practice with the aim of improving the quality of the programs on offer.
The visitors had a chance to meet the heads and other representatives of the individual faculties (including Általános Orvostudományi Kar [Faculty of Medicine], Gyógyszerésztudományi Kar [Faculty of Pharmacy], Fogorvostudományi Kar [Faculty of Dentistry], Természettudományi és Technológia Kar [Faculty of Science and Technology], Informatikai Kar [Faculty of Informatics], and Műszaki Kar [Faculty of Engineering]) that offer the most popular programs in English, and they could also get hands-on experience about the practical aspects of several courses.
Among other things, they could get some insight into the international program in medicine and visit Kassai úti campus as well as quite a few of the institutions in the Clinical Center. Based upon the experience and information package collected during the course of their two-day visit and tailored to the specific needs of the University of Debrecen, the international consultants will be working on constructing the framework of the international training course designed to take place here in the fall of 2018.
