Respectable specialists attended the 14th Congress of the ISEM – International Experimental Microsurgery Society, which was held between the 23rd and 25th of August, in Kölcsey Center. The International Society for Experimental Microsurgery (ISEM) has organized this year’s congress with more than a hundred Hungarian and foreign experts, including professors of the University of Debrecen. The renowned professional meeting was attended by experts from 19 countries including Brazil, Canada, China, Japan, India and several European countries. The special congress – which is held every second year – was organized before in Montreal, Shanghai, Sao Paulo and Kyoto.
The fact that this special meeting was held in Debrecen for the second time (the first one was in 2004) indicates the international recognition of microsurgical methodology and scientific activity applied at the University of Debrecen – said Norbert Nemeth, president of this year’s congress, ISEM’s former president.
In the 1960s, Professor István Furka founded the microsurgical education at Debrecen’s medical school, and during the 1990s, it became a tradition that medical students already get access to microsurgery education during their initial training courses and they can practice the basic techniques. Furthermore, due to the postgraduate trainings and medical training courses, the University of Debrecen has a major role in the education of young surgeons who want to deepen their microsurgical skills.
Special surgical interventions, done with the help of microscopes, are of great importance in plastic surgery and reconstruction operations, as well as in the field of hand surgery, neurosurgery and ophthalmology. At the same time, microsurgery plays a key role in, for example, zoobiological and transplant researches.
At the congress, there were 80 lectures on new researches and achievements.
