The Institute of English and American Studies of the University of Debrecen, together with the US Embassy in Budapest and the American Huts in Hungary, announced an English-language discussion and video competition for high school students. The theme is the recent return of the Holy Crown.
This year, for the sixth time, the Institute of English and American Studies of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Debrecen is organizing an English-language national discussion competition, called DEbate, for high school students. This year’s DEbate is related to the programs organized on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the establishment of American-Hungarian diplomatic relations.

“The proposition that the troops must argue for and against this time is the statement that the United States should not have returned the Holy Crown to Hungary in 1978, as this meant legitimizing the then Hungarian political system and its leaders,” he explained. with the portal hirek.unideb.hu Balázs Venkovits, assistant professor at the North American Department of the Institute of English and American Studies of the Faculty of Arts.

The main organizer of the program said that in the first round of the competition, the series of events related to the above statement and the two sides of the discussion concerning it should be presented to the applicants in the form of a creative video of up to 30 minutes. According to Zsuzsanna Lénárt-Muszka, teaching assistant of the North American Department of the Institute of English and American Studies, the other organizer of the competition, although the format is unusual, excellent teams can be expected to apply this year as well. The organizers are confident that the contestants will process the history of the return of the crown and the controversial issues based primarily on evidence based on their own research.

Interested teams of three students, led by a teacher, can indicate their intention to participate on this web form by October 15th.

There will be time for work, as the videos will be waiting for the jury until November 15. If the epidemic situation allows, the teams that submit the best films will also be able to argue with each other in the final at the end of the year, in English. Works and discussions will be judged by experts who take into account, among other things, the creativity of the participants, the quality of the language, and the collaboration and presentation skills of the team members. The best receive valuable prizes.

Tibor Glant, an associate professor at the Institute of English and American Studies, will help students prepare with online lectures on the turning points of American-Hungarian relations and the return of the Holy Crown to Hungary.

More information about the competition can be found on the event’s Facebook page.
