The University of Debrecen has participated in the development of vaccines against the most common pathogens causing diarrhea. The institution performed clinical trials on healthy volunteers on behalf of a biotechnology company founded by Hungarian experts.
Bacterial diarrhea is a significant problem for foreigners arriving in developing countries. Vaccines developed at the university against the two most common pathogens specifically causing diarrhea – Shigella and Enterotoxic Escherichia coli – were tested in a phase I study.
The aim of the study was to determine the optimal dose in addition to efficacy and safety.
A similar study has not been performed at the University of Debrecen before. During the procedure, the University of Debrecen represented significant added value in research and development

They added that the effectiveness of the vaccine, with favorable results, could be tested in the next step already in patients in developing countries.
