The open day of the International Astronaut Congress was held at the University of Debrecen. The participating foreign astronauts promoted space science among university students and high school students studying in the field of science and got acquainted with the University of Debrecen space research program.

An international day congress was held at the University of Debrecen in connection with the International Space Congress of the Association of Space Explorers (ASE), based in the United States, which brings together about 400 astronauts from thirty-eight countries.

At the opening of the event held in the Hall of the University of Debrecen Main Building, Ákos Pintér, Deputy Rector of the University of Debrecen, emphasized that the researchers working at the university contribute to the development of space science with high added value in the institution.

Prospective astronauts will be recruited in Debrecen

Researchers at the University of Debrecen deal with the field of space research in an innovative way, and in the UD SPACE program, they also study the effects of space travel on the human body, as well as its technical conditions.

During a longer stay in space, it is not possible to add sufficient amounts of nutrients that are necessary for survival, the goal is to produce wholesome food on spacecraft. The university space program also deals with the quality of life of astronauts, space medicine, because microgravity changes the physiological state, muscles and bones are reduced, and we try to find a solution to these problems as well. UD has been conducting research on space since the 1970s, and a university that aims to be considered one of the best in the world must have a research portfolio that caters to current societal needs and prepares them for the challenges of societ, for the benefit of the humanity of the future

– Deputy Rector László Csernoch told hirek.unideb.hu.

In his speech, László Papp, Mayor of Debrecen, emphasized that the city always saw the possibility of development in knowledge and praised the internationally authoritative scientific achievements and research results of the University of Debrecen and the Nuclear Research Institute. He added that scientific work at UD could be a milestone for further success in space research.

The nine astronauts attending the event also met with students who are attending science courses and are interested in space exploration.

On the open day, experts from the University of Debrecen gave lectures on space sciences, so participants could learn about the UD space research project, as well as the latest ideas for the Mars and Moon research programs.
