Commemoration and award ceremony at the University and National Library of Debrecen

The University and National Library of the University of Debrecen (DEENK) organized a commemoration on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of István Csűry. The former director-general of the library was remembered in a roundtable discussion with lectures at the event on December 2.

Miklós Bényei, a retired honorary university professor and former deputy director of the county library, gave a presentation by Márta Virágos, former director-general of the university library, and Leonárd Petró, deputy general director of public relations at DEENK.

During the roundtable discussion, his former colleagues recalled their memories of István Csűry.

István Csűry is the former director-general of the University Library, the recipient of the award for the Socialist Culture, the Ervin Szabó commemorative medal, and the silver degree of the Order of Merit. A II. Due to World War II, he graduated from the University of Debrecen in 1945 with a degree in Hungarian-German Studies. In 1946 he obtained a doctorate in humanities. From 1945 to 1980 he worked in the University Library of Debrecen: as a volunteer trainee (1945), library assistant (1946), head of department (1950), from 1947 to 1949 he was Deputy Director of Imre Kondor, director from 1956 and director-general from 1977. From 1958 to 1979, he was editor of the yearbook Book and Library. Between 1972 and 1975, he was the superintendent of university libraries in Hungary.

Its name includes the modernization of the university library, the networking and joint operation, reservation and joint operation of several libraries of the institution, the expansion of the information activities of the service, and the establishment of urban and regional interlibrary-bibliographic cooperation.

The István Csűry Commemorative Medal was presented at the event, which – posthumously – was received by her daughter on behalf of Klára Koltay, the former Deputy General Manager of DEENK. Professor András Jávor, Chief Adviser to the Rector of the University of Debrecen, received the Commemorative Medal for the University and National Library.

To cherish the memory of the former director-general of the library of the DEENK management college, he founded the István Csűry Commemorative Medal in 2003, which can be awarded in recognition of his outstanding achievements in the field of library science and practical library work for several years.

The Commemorative Medal for the University and National Library acknowledge my support for the University and National Library.

The awards were presented by Gyöngyi Christmas, CEO of the University of Debrecen University and National Library.
