Sándor Antus, professor at the University of Debrecen, passed away

Professor Emeritus, Sándor Antus, a Széchenyi Prize-winning chemical engineer, a full member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, a retired head of department at the University of Debrecen, passed away on December 1, 2021.

Antus Sándor was born in Szeged on February 28, 1944. He obtained a degree in chemical engineering from the Budapest University of Technology in 1968 and a doctorate in 1971 in the field of isoflavonoid synthesis and structure confirmation.

In 1992, he was entrusted with the management of the Department of Organic Chemistry at the Lajos Kossuth University, the predecessor institution of the University of Debrecen.

His internationally recognized scientific work has focused on the isolation, structure-exploration, synthesis, determination of their absolute configuration, and action-structure relationships of biologically active O- and N-heterocyclic compounds of natural origin.

Between 2004 and 2012, he headed the carbohydrate chemistry research in Debrecen as the head of the Carbohydrate Chemistry Research Group of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

In recognition of his scientific work, he was elected a corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 2004 and a full member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 2010.

In the period between 2008 and 2014, he worked as a university professor at the University of Debrecen, and from 2015 as Professor Emeritus.
