Olympic champion speed skater Liu Shaoang, a student of the university’s sports organization, was received on Tuesday by the leaders of the institution and the maintenance foundation, Member of Parliament Lajos Kósa, president of the Hungarian National Skating Association, president of the Student Government (HÖK) and students. Following the greeting, the athlete gave an account of the experience at a ceremony held in the University Hall.
Liu Shaoang, a student of sports organization at the Faculty of Economics at the University of Debrecen, achieved success in sports history in the final of the 500-meter speed skating competition at the Beijing Winter Olympics. The athlete won Hungary’s first individual Olympic championship in the history of the Winter Olympics. The short-track speed skater also won a bronze medal in Beijing individually in the 1000 meters and as a member of the mixed relay.

“With his results at the Winter Olympics, Shaoang has given us a lot of fun, a multidisciplinary university that focuses on sports. The university has its own sports club with a DEAC 3000 certified athlete. Ádó does not play sports here, but we are proud that we can prepare him for his life after his sports career – emphasized Chancellor Zoltán Bács, who welcomed the Debrecen Olympics on behalf of the institution, the Faculty of Economics and the Institute of Sports Economics and Management.

Liu Shaoang, an Outstanding Student of the University of Debrecen, was awarded an award in recognition of the outstanding Olympic results and sports achievements of the Student Government of the University of Debrecen. The award was presented to the Olympic champion by István Csont, President of the Student Government of the University of Debrecen.
After the award ceremony, Liu Shaoang revived that a number of circumstances made it difficult to compete. His COVID test was positive before the Olympics, so he could only travel after the team later.
“There were a lot of people behind me who had faith in me and helped keep things right. I trusted the president, the staff, the team, without them it would not have been possible. This medal is not only mine but also for the people who kept supporting me”, said Liu Shaoang.
Ádó was greeted by the HÖK delegation at the Practicing Ice Hall in Budapest after the Olympics, but this time they can meet their internationally renowned university colleagues in Debrecen.
