Almost one-fifth of the winning applications are related to the University of Debrecen (DE) in the applications of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA) and the Eötvös Loránd Research Network (ELKH): factors in the development of allergies and the prevention of sudden cardiac death are also being researched in various faculties of the institution.
On Wednesday, the University of Debrecen informed MTI that 17 of their units could hold the title of Excellent Research Center of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and that 20 of their research groups had won a total of more than HuF 650 million in ELKH’s tenders.
It was recalled that the Hungarian Academy of Sciences issued an application for the Certificate of Excellence in March 2021, for which 114 research groups applied; the decision-making body announced 95 winners, including 17 DE candidates.
ELKH announced a tender last summer for a new five-year period beginning July 1st. Nationwide, twenty of the 95 winners have research groups at the University of Debrecen, eight have received a total of HuF 657.8 million a year to continue the work they have already begun, and 12 have just received a total of HuF 657.8 million a year.
Most of the winning research groups thus operate under the auspices of the University of Debrecen, they wrote.
According to the information, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences’ Certificate of Excellence is valid for five years, and it is an advantage to have the title during the evaluation of further research grant applications announced by the academy. The Eötvös Loránd Research Network also provides the winning applicants with the conditions for successful research work with significant financial support for five years.
It was emphasized that the institution also has research groups that have been successful in both applications. Among them is the Allergology Research Group of the Faculty of General Medicine, which studies the factors of allergy development and possible ways of prevention, primarily in the immunological approach of the skin and mucosa.
One of the research groups operating in the Faculty of Arts wants to explore the values that belong to the Hungarian cultural heritage scattered in the world by processing new written sources, archeological finds and art treasures preserved in Hungarian and foreign archives.
The Faculty of Pharmacy is conducting research on the topic of sudden cardiac death: they are investigating the production of molecules that can be successfully used to prevent cell death through preclinical activity.
The Stress Biology Research Group of the Faculty of Science and Technology is investigating microscopic fungi to develop new drug raw materials that may even be suitable for the production of yeast-based probiotics in the future, the paper said.
