The University of Debrecen is among the top 700 higher education institutions in the world in the latest global ranking of Quacquarelli Symonds. The institution has been able to improve its academic reputation and the proportion of foreign lecturers, and it still holds second place among Hungarian universities.
London-based Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has been compiling a world ranking of higher education institutions since 2004. For QS World University Rankings 2023, published on Wednesday, QS surveyed 2,462 higher education institutions and ranked 1,422 universities, 124 for the first time on the list. The University of Debrecen ranked 651-700, making it the best 46 percent of the ranked institutions.
– As in previous years, we are still outstanding in the proportion of foreign students, ranking 161st in the international comparison. In addition, the institution has improved the assessment of the academic sphere as well as the proportion of foreign lecturers in the indicator. Rankings are also suitable for assessing what needs to improve strongly. Scientific activity is a particularly important parameter, especially the number of quality publications and references related to the university must be significantly increased – Ákos Pintér, Rector for Rector, told hirek.unideb.hu.
When compiling the list, the experts of Quacquarelli Symonds take into account six aspects: the assessment of the academic sphere (40%), the proportion of lecturers and students (20%), the opinion of employers (10%), the frequency of citations of scientific works related to the institution (20%) and the proportion of foreign teachers and students (5-5%).
The 2023 rankings are led by DE’s overseas partner, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States, the University of Cambridge, and Stanford University. In addition to the University of Debrecen, the University of Szeged, the Eötvös Loránd University, the University of Pécs, the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, the Hungarian University of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the Széchenyi István University, the Corvinus University of Budapest, the University of Miskolc to the international list.
