Almost 90 Ph.D. students from Hungarian higher education institutions providing agricultural education presented their research results at the 1st Symposium of Hungarian Agricultural Doctoral Students, which was held at the Faculty of Agriculture and Food Science and Environmental Management of the University of Debrecen. The Debrecen Agricultural Academy was represented by 23 young researchers with animal husbandry, crop cultivation and food science research.

At the two-day conference of Hungarian doctoral students in agricultural sciences, more than 70 lectures were given in 7 sections in the fields of veterinary medicine, animal husbandry, food science, forestry and game management, environmental and nature conservation, and plant growth and horticultural sciences.

The conference can initiate the collective thinking of agricultural researchers, through which specialists can examine the challenges facing agriculture in their complexity. For the researchers of the future, it is not enough to think about the scientific question alone, they can only formulate the answers together. It is essential that they get to know each other’s research areas and find common points and synergies in which they can work and think together. Because the more broadly they look at solving their research task, the more accurate results they will get. The conference provides an opportunity for this

– said László Csernoch, scientific vice-chancellor of the University of Debrecen, in his opening speech.

László Stündl, dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and Food Science and Environmental Management, emphasized the importance of scientific supply at the opening of the symposium.

The work of current doctoral students is decisive for the future of agriculture. These young researchers can contribute to agricultural enterprises operating and producing more efficiently and sustainably with their knowledge. The task of the higher education institutions conducting agricultural training is to support and help their work, as well as to show them a life path that encourages them to continue their scientific activities

– László Stündl added.

About 1,300 students with Ph.D. scholarships study in the 25 doctoral schools of the University of Debrecen. Among them, 123 young people carry out their scientific work with the support of the UD Agricultural Science Doctoral Council, within the framework of the Doctoral School of Nutrition and Food Science, the Doctoral School of Animal Husbandry Sciences and the Kálmán Kerpely Doctoral School.

The National Association of Doctoral Students (DOSZ) builds a community while protecting and representing interests. The scientific departments of the organization, which were established almost 10 years ago – like the Department of Agricultural Sciences – connect doctoral students and doctoral schools doing research in the same scientific field. Permanence and renewal are characteristic of the association as well as of agriculture. And in order to be able to follow today’s challenges, it is necessary to strive for renewal. DOSZ also helps Ph.D. students with this during their doctoral training

– explained Dániel Molnár, president of DOSZ.

For the first time, the Agricultural Science Department of the National Association of Doctoral Students organized the two-day scientific meeting on February 24 and 25 with the intention of creating a tradition.

The main goal of the symposium is for agricultural students with Ph.D. scholarships to get to know each other’s research, so that various collaborations can develop in the future

– emphasized Péter Hajdú, president of the Department of Agricultural Sciences of the DOSZ.

A round table discussion was also held as part of the two-day program, where it was discussed, among other things, the situation of the scholarship system for doctoral students, the improvement of the creditworthiness of students participating in doctoral training, and the inclusion of training time in pensions.
