At Friday’s scientific session held in Kenézy Villa, the head of the institute Karolina Kósa reported on the educational and scientific activities of the Institute of Behavioral Sciences of the University of Debrecen and the most important research topics in the last five years. The current head has been at the head of the institute since 2018, his term of office expires this year after five years.
As a result of a Senate decision, the Institute of Behavioral Sciences was transferred from the Faculty of Public Health to the Faculty of General Medicine as of July 1, 2020. This decision opened a new era in the life of the institute, which, in addition to the continuous support of the dean, is characterized by the gradual solution of the problems that have existed for years and the unbroken professional construction
– institute director Karolina Kósa began her report at the academic session on Friday.
Karolina Kósa explained: one of the main tasks of the institute is the teaching of behavioral science subjects in the basic and master’s programs in medicine and health sciences, therefore their colleagues also teach at other faculties of the University of Debrecen.
The institute also has an independent course, the master’s course in health psychology, which we offer both full-time and correspondence courses. Another important task of ours is the organization and teaching of the four-year professional training in clinical psychology, as one of the three training centers in Hungary. Our residents also play a significant role in the performance of educational tasks
– said the head of the institute.
The institute currently has thirteen instructors with scientific qualifications. Karolina Kósa emphasized that supporting the international publication activities of the lecturers are treated as a priority, primarily the publication of publications in English, as well as the establishment of research collaborations with the organizational units of other faculties.
Covering the open access and publication costs of international publications is continuously resolved at ÁOK, for all researchers in addition to those participating in tenders. This was also reflected in the number of announcements in foreign languages, which rose from the typical 5.5 per year in 2018-2019 to 15.6 in 2020-2022
– the professor reported.
Among the priority research topics of the clinical psychology and health psychology working group are, among others, the study of childhood traumatization and resilience, the epidemiology of mental disorders and their risk states, as well as psychological therapies that can be used among people suffering from mental disorders. The research topics of the health humanities working group include medicalization, the problem area of end-of-life decisions, and the ethical problems of embryo-stem cell research. In the last five years, the staff of the institute has also participated in several important research applications.
Karolina Kósa was appointed head of the institute for five years in 2018. The faculty will soon issue a tender to fill the position, which the current head of the institute will also run.
