József Békési from Derecske has been waiting for a new kidney since 2020, and he underwent a successful organ transplant in May at the Clinical Center of the University of Debrecen, writes unideb.hu.

I consider it a real miracle that I was able to get a kidney, I feel that this is the beginning of my new life. I will take great care of my new kidney, I will not consume alcohol or spicy food, I will take care of adequate fluid intake, and I will try to protect myself from infections. After my operation, I already visited the dialysis center, I try to give hope to my fellow patients waiting for a transplant

– József Békési told hirek.unideb.hu.

The operation was problem-free, the patient was able to go home nine days after the procedure, and since then he has already returned to work, working as a field guard and security guard.

The first transplant was performed in Hungary in 1962. The Derecske man’s operation was the 12,000th organ transplant in Hungary. Of the 12,000 organ transplants, 9,626 were kidney, 1,277 liver, 772 heart, 196 pancreas, and 129 lung transplants. The Clinical Center of the University of Debrecen is one of the four transplant centers in the country. Organ transplants have been performed at the institution since 1991.

The first non-living donor (cadaver) kidney transplant was performed in Debrecen in 1991, the first living donor transplant was in 2010, but it has been taking place since 2015 according to the program. More than 1.8 million residents of three counties belong to the Clinical Center in terms of organ harvesting and kidney transplantation. Patient follow-up is also important, we currently care for a total of 500 transplant patients in several care facilities

– informed Balázs Nemes, head associate professor of the Organ Transplantation Department of the University of Debrecen, head of the Kidney Transplantation Department of the Surgical Clinic of the University of Debrecen.
