The next season of the oDEon University Theater will soon begin with a series of interviews and musical productions unique in Hungarian higher education. In a joint program with the Institute of Light Music of the University of Debrecen, popular Hungarian musicians are invited, who can set an example for university students with their life experience and professional success. The oDEon Opera and the oDEon Dance Theater are also being presented this season.
Every three weeks, on Thursdays, oDEon’s new talk program series awaits the audience with the motto “easy musician’s lives”, in which the country’s well-known and experienced musicians take the stage and confess honestly about their personal musical past and life story. In the first semester of the series, which starts as an optional course for students and is also available to external interested parties, the older lecturers will be heard. The evenings starting on September 28 will be hosted by Veronika Végh, director of the oDEon University Theater and radio host Ferenc Váradi.
Even before the epidemic, the idea of starting an innovative, optional course promoting the university, in which we host musical legends and present their life journey, came up. It is important that not only the Faculty of Music, but also university students studying in other fields can apply, but also external interested parties can participate in the events by redeeming a symbolic ticket. These will not primarily be musical-professional productions. It is an initiative that is unique, no other higher education institution has organized it yet
– Kálmán Kapusi, director of the Institute of Classical Music at the University of Debrecen, told hirek.unideb.hu.
The soon-to-be-started theater season will be busier than ever at the University of Debrecen, as ten own productions are included in the program, four of which have already been seen by the public, and six are being played for the first time. There will be operas, operettas and musicals, but other musical pieces are also produced in the theater.
It is very exciting that new horizons are opening up for us this year. In addition to University Citizen Rock performing a new piece, our International Theater troupe made up of foreign university students will return and the Zene Theatrum Musical will also be present on the oDEon stage. We are creating the oDEon Opera and the oDEon Dance Theater with the aim of giving talented young people at the beginning of their careers an opportunity to introduce themselves. We would like to continue to place great emphasis on the involvement of Hungarian and foreign students, the raison d’être of this is proven by the fact that our lectures prepared with them are continuously sold out. We want to give space to all theater genres. I have been working for people who love theater for twenty-three years, I can safely say that we know the recipe for success. We expect a season that fully meets the theater expectations of the people living in the region
– said the head of oDEon, Veronika Végh.
In addition to the interview series launched jointly with the Faculty of Music’s Institute of Light Music and its own premieres, the audience will be able to see a number of productions that come to the university theater with guest appearances by popular and well-loved Hungarian actors. The oDEon season begins with the previously huge hit musical The Jungle Book. The show will be shown twice, on Monday, September 4th and Tuesday, September 5th, at the theater on Böszörményi Street.
On Sunday, September 17, the musical Chicago, a co-production between the University of Debrecen and the University of Dramatic Arts, will be shown at oDEon, and on the 27th, The Lion King will be represented by students from 15 countries.
