The Ministry of Culture and Innovation announced on Wednesday that eight Hungarian universities have been included in the top 500 of the prestigious Shanghai Ranking, which compares the top 1900 universities from 96 countries.
The announcement stated that these Hungarian universities have competed with renowned institutions like Harvard and Oxford in five main scientific fields. Semmelweis University ranked among the top 100 in pharmaceutical sciences, while Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest University of Technology and Economics, and the University of Veterinary Medicine also performed exceptionally well.
The Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS), which has been published annually since 2017, lists 1900 universities from 96 countries across 5 main categories and 55 subfields this year. The main categories are natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences.
GRAS evaluates the performance of institutions based on comprehensive and objective indicators. The ranking is determined by factors such as the number of researchers and alumni who have won international awards (such as the Nobel Prize), chief editors of scientific journals, members of the executive boards of international organizations, the number of publications, citation impact, and participation in international collaborations.
Of the 64 Hungarian higher education institutions, eight universities were ranked in 22 fields, all of which are in the top 500: Semmelweis University and Eötvös Loránd University in 7 fields, Budapest University of Technology and Economics, University of Debrecen, and University of Szeged in 5 fields, Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences, University of Veterinary Medicine, and University of Pécs in 1 field.
Semmelweis University is ranked 82nd worldwide in the category of pharmaceutical sciences and is among the top 200 universities in the category of clinical medicine.
Three more institutions achieved top rankings in the following categories: civil engineering – BME #101-150, Mathematics #151-200 – ELTE, Veterinary Medicine – ATE #151-200.
The University of Szeged and the University of Debrecen improved their positions in four fields, while BME, ELTE, and Semmelweis University improved in three fields, and MATE and the University of Pécs improved in one field – according to the Ministry’s announcement.
