The first scheduled flight of Wizz Air arrived to Debrecen. The plane from London, Luton landed on Airport Debrecen at 9.32 am on 18 June and was greeted with water spray according to the customs. (Photos!)
172 passengers arrived to Debrecen by the 180-seat airplane; 10 percent of them were British tourists. The passengers were greeted by the Kodály philharmonic band and the leaders of the city. After half an hour of waiting, the airplane took off to London, Luton airport with full house. At the press conference following the arrival of the Wizz Air plane, Mayor Lajos Kósa said that the flights between Debrecen and London would go on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and that from this autumn on, it will be possible to travel to Eindhoven and Milan-Malpensa from Debrecen by Wizz Air. The mayor highlighted that the air transport is expected to boost business and health tourism in Debrecen. According to Chief Executive Officer of Wizz Air, József Váradi , the new flight has placed Debrecen on the map of Europe and he expressed his belief that this will be a success story for the city. He also said that Airport Debrecen might develop into a base in a couple of years which means that the airplanes will not return to London the same day but they will stay the night at the airport.
