Tesla is recalling hundreds of thousands of cars due to a defect in its self-driving system

Global

Under pressure from American authorities, Tesla is recalling 362,000 cars equipped with full self-driving systems for a software update, according to documents published on Thursday.

The decision was made after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that the driver support system does not comply with traffic safety legislation and may cause accidents.

According to the authority’s point of view, the software allows the vehicle it navigates to exceed the speed limit and drive into intersections in an illegal or unpredictable manner, increasing the risk of a collision.

Tesla disputes the traffic safety organization’s findings but said it will comply with the request.

At the same time, according to the company, there is no knowledge that, in the case of the vehicles affected by the recall, the complaints of deficiency have led to any injuries or deaths.

Regarding the system, warranty measures have been requested a total of 18 times, the announcement states.

The Texas-based automaker announced that it will update its self-driving software system via remote access for affected vehicles, which are models built between 2016 and 2023.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is conducting several investigations into the manufacturer known for its electric cars over its self-driving technology over alleged accidents.
