The Easter long weekend is coming, so the opening hours of shops will change in Hungary

The holiday opening hours of shops are determined by law, so most shops are closed on Friday, Sunday and Monday. As in previous years, this year there are also some exceptions where you can shop in urgent cases – writes index.hu.


According to the legislation, shops must be closed on public holidays in Hungary. Under this, shopping centers and larger department store chains cannot open:

  • on March 29, Good Friday,
  • on March 31, Easter Sunday,
  • and April 1, Easter Monday.

On Thursday, March 28, we can still shop and on March 30, we can enter the stores according to the general Saturday opening hours, depending on the store.

The stores of Aldi, Auchan, Cba, Lidl, Tesco, Penny Market, Spar and Interspar are also closed on Holidays.

According to the summary of 24.hu, in urgent cases, you can shop in some places even on holiday. On the Easter long weekend, the supermarket-type stores near the gas stations will be open:

  • gas stations, among them there is one designed as a convenience store,
  • pharmacies operating according to the duty schedule,
  • independent flower shops,
  • the newspapermen
  • candy stores,
  • catering and entertainment venues,
  • the smaller shops, traffic shops, where the owner or a family member is the seller.

They added that garbage is also delivered according to the usual schedule on holidays. On Tuesday, April 2, the shops are waiting for customers according to the usual opening hours. Stores must always indicate changes to opening hours, and it is worth checking before leaving.

In addition to the opening hours, it will also be worth paying attention to the clock change associated with summertime, which falls on March 31, Easter Sunday. In this case, the watches must be advanced from 2 am to 3 am.
