The Hajdúböszörmény District Prosecutor’s Office has brought charges of fraud and other offenses against a man who, according to the indictment, used another person’s personal details to advertise products for sale and then tricked buyers into paying for items he did not possess.

According to the indictment, the defendant obtained another person’s photograph and personal details by unknown means and used them to create a profile on a social media platform. In June 2024, he used the profile to advertise products for sale that he did not actually have.

He contacted people interested in the advertisements using a false name and, after reaching an agreement, deceived the victims into transferring the purchase price in advance to a bank account he provided.

After the money was transferred to his account, the defendant did not send the advertised products to the buyers and spent the money he had obtained through criminal means.

On June 1, 2024, the man advertised a children’s outdoor playset, for which the victim transferred HUF 130,000 to the defendant’s account that same day. On June 3, a victim transferred HUF 80,000 for furniture offered for sale by the defendant. On June 4, he advertised furniture, a refrigerator and chandeliers, for which a victim transferred HUF 160,000. The defendant failed to deliver the products to any of the buyers.

The Hajdúböszörmény District Prosecutor’s Office has filed charges against the repeat offender with the Hajdúböszörmény District Court for three counts of business-like fraud causing minor financial damage and the continued offense of misuse of personal data. In its indictment, the prosecution proposed that if the defendant confesses to the charges at the preparatory hearing and waives his right to a trial, the court should sentence him to 1 year and 10 months in prison and ban him from exercising public rights for two years.
