Hungarian inflation update: Prices rose 4.4% year-on-year in May 2025

In May 2025, consumer prices were on average 4.4% higher than a year earlier. Compared to April, prices rose by 0.2% on average, the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH) reported on Wednesday.

Food prices increased by 5.9% over 12 months (or 4.5% excluding catering services). Within this category:

  • Eggs: +26.0%

  • Cooking oil: +25.3%

  • Flour: +25.0%

  • Coffee: +22.5%

  • Chocolate and cocoa: +22.3%

  • Fruit and vegetable juices: +14.1%

  • Buffet items: +10.6%

  • Non-alcoholic soft drinks: +8.4%

  • Milk: +7.3%

  • Bread: +6.9%

At the same time, prices decreased for:

  • Margarine: –30.0%

  • Dairy products: –7.4%

  • Bologna and sausages: –7.3%

  • Pork: –1.6%

Services became 5.9% more expensive, including:

  • Postal services: +11.3%

  • Rent: +10.4%

  • Vehicle and home repair and maintenance: +9.9%

  • Holiday services: +8.5%

Alcoholic beverages and tobacco products: +7.3%, including tobacco alone: +7.9%

According to the report, household energy prices increased by 5.3% on average:

  • Piped gas: +11.4%

  • Bottled gas: +6.8%

Durable consumer goods: +2.2%

  • Jewelry: +22.7%

  • Living room furniture: +4.1%

  • New cars: +4.0%

  • Used cars: –0.8%

Vehicle fuel prices decreased by 4.8%, while pharmaceuticals and medical products increased by 5.4% compared to a year earlier.


Compared to April, consumer prices rose by 0.2% on average.

Food prices increased by 0.6% (also +0.6% excluding catering services), largely driven by a 1.6% rise in the prices of seasonal products (potatoes, fresh vegetables, local and tropical fruits). Additional increases:

  • Chocolate and cocoa: +2.6%

  • Coffee: +1.8%

  • Buffet items: +1.2%

  • Pork: +1.0%

  • Flour: +0.9%

Meanwhile, prices decreased for:

  • Eggs: –2.5%

  • Margarine: –2.2%

  • Milk: –0.9%

The largest month-on-month increase was in alcohol and tobacco, with prices up 0.9%, including a 1.0% rise in tobacco.

Household energy increased by 0.8%:

  • Piped gas: +2.2%

  • Bottled gas: –1.4%

Service prices dropped slightly, by 0.1%:

  • Telephone and internet services: –2.2%

  • Domestic holidays: +3.8%

  • Personal care services: +0.7%

Vehicle fuel prices dropped by 1.9%, and pharmaceuticals and medical products rose by 0.3%, the KSH reported.
