Professor István Fábián has been voted by the Senate as new rector of UD. He will be head of the institution for the next 3 years, starting July 1.
UD’s Senate elected the new rector by secret ballot on April 8. 67 of the 74-member body were present at the election, 60 of whom casted their vote for professor Fábián.
The other candidate, professor Attila Peth?, dean of the Faculty of Informatics, withdrew his application a few hours before the election.
István Fábián was born in 1956 in Debrecen. He completed his studies as a chemist in 1980 at the predecessor institution of UD, Kossuth Lajos University. Since 1982 he has been a member of the Department of Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry. A full professor from 2003, he was appointed head of department in 2005. in 2008 he was elected president of the university’s Centre of Arts, Humanities and Sciences.
Professor Fábián has been guest professor in Germany, Japan and the USA. He is a member of the American Chemical Society, the International Ozone Association, the editorial board of Inorganic Reaction Mechanisms and is editor-in-chief of Reaction Kynetics and Catalysis Letters. He is a recipient of the Alexander von Humboldt and Széchenyi István scholarships.
István Fábián is to take over from current rector László Fésüs on July 1, 2010. He said he was honoured by the Senate’s confidence in him, and emphasized the importance of the continuity of development in the coming few years. He will be serving as head of UD until June 30, 2013.
